Tel Aviv Is Vegan Capital of the World and Israeli Army is the Most Vegan Army in the World
Israel has been officially dubbed Vegan Nation, and its second largest city, Tel Aviv, has earned the title of vegan capital of the world, with 25,000 declared vegans, 32 vegan restaurants, and 400 “vegan-friendly” food establishments. Approximately 5 percent of the Israeli population identifies as vegan—the highest percentage in the world—with close to 10 percent saying they are vegetarians, according to the Israeli animal rights group, Animals Now. According to Israeli Army Radio, 1 out of 18 Israeli soldiers eschews eating dairy products, eggs, fish, and other animal derivatives, making the IDF the most vegan army in the world. A vegan party, Tivonit, even announced plans to run in the Tel Aviv municipal elections.
